This book is intended as a companion piece to the popular and best selling Dear Old Ballina. Fourteen walks, all of varying lengths, are laid out, with key points of attraction along the way, and with accompanying maps created by Artsworks Ballina that pinpoint well over 100 landmarks and people, as well as architectural features of the town, recently recognised as the Salmon Capital of Ireland.
Famous people featured include President Mary Robinson; Archbishop John MacHale; General Humbert of 1798; the Revd Edward Nangle of the Achill Mission and Skreen; The Earl of Lucan of the Charge of the Light Brigade infamy; the Revd James Greer; the first channel swimmer William Webb; Daniel O'Connell; Michael Davitt; Charles Stewart Parnell, Rosary priest Fr Patrick Peyton; Isaac Butt; pioneering Scottish engineer Alexander Nimmo; Jack B Yeats; Robert Emmet, etc, all of whom can be linked to the town.
And historic buildings and monuments are visited, including the Workhouse, The Dolmen, the military barracks, The Font, Humbert Monument, orphanages, Belleek Manor, The Quay, plus events from WWI and the War of Independence, the bloody massacre of the Scots in 1586, and Ardnaree and all its wonders.
The book is designed in a slimline pocket format, containing 100 pages, and walks are broken up into streets, so that they can be undertaken whenever the mood strikes. The two longest walks are through The Quay area, and, on the other side of the river, Belleek Woods.
The author has dedicated the book to the memory of the late Jackie Clarke who left his priceless collection of memorabilia to the town; this will be housed in a specially dedicated museum in the town's old Provincial Bank building.
